This is an example daily maintenance checklist designed for schools. You can use this checklist as is or edit it to fit your own requirements. School buildings are important long term assets that are often also used as community facilities. Every type of school building should have effective stewardship and a maintenance regime to ensure safe condition and a secure environment.

A sample daily checklist is as follows:

• Briefly check rooms, corridors, toilets and kitchen for general cleanliness, repair and safety – e.g. trip hazards or wear and tear
• Check firefighting equipment visually and report any damage – e.g. missing pins
• Check that all safety signs and notices are legible – consider if they are in line with the latest H&S standards
• Ensure toilets are well stocked with toilet paper, soap and towels at the start of the day and after breaks and lunchtime
• Check sanitary disposal units are available and in good order
• Check buildings for slip, trip or fall hazards and obstructions
• Ensure disabled access routes and fire exits, escape routes and assembly points are clear of obstructions and relevant doors are unlocked
• Check no flammable materials have been placed or stored underneath stairways
• Ensure that access to the school for emergency services is clear and unobstructed
• In icy weather, ensure paths and walkways are treated with salt and grit
• Inspect for damage any folding table and chair units used by pupils at mealtimes
• Check for damage any adventure playground equipment or other outside facilities vulnerable to vandalism
• Ensure wastepaper baskets and bins in classrooms have been emptied into external recycling and waste bins
• Check that external waste bins and storage are covered, secured and located a safe distance away from buildings
• Ensure cleaning products have been stored safely and securely, out of the reach of pupils
